Human trafficking , the modern form of slavery, is a global phenomenon that transcends geographical and ethnic boundaries. It constitutes one of the most serious crimes against human dignity. The number of identified victims in the European Union has increased dramatically in recent years. Most victims are women, particularly migrants from third countries.

Specifically, Greece has gained the reputation of being a “hub of human trafficking in Europe,” functioning both as a country of entry into the EU and as a destination for victims. In Greece, the high demand for labor in the agricultural and tourism sectors provides traffickers and exploiters with the opportunity to take advantage of the vulnerable position and survival needs of migrants, building well-organized networks that generate enormous profits with minimal risk and zero investment — from a purely economic perspective.

The young man in the photo is Chico, a young refugee, on the day of the performance “Untitled for now: an old fable” at the National Opera House, in which he took part. Chico, an extremely ambitious child who has already been integrated into our society, has received a negative decision to be granted international protection and his life is in serious danger if he is taken back to his country. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he experienced a dramatic childhood. At the age of 10, his entire family was slaughtered by soldiers. He himself, who happened to be away from home, escaped the massacre but was of course forced to flee his country, as he was himself a target.
