People who prove that racism has not taken over society

Friday 25th September. Six children from the Unaccompanied Minors' Shelter "Nefeli 1" visit the temple of Poseidon in Sounio. The enthusiasm of the children is indescribable. They are impressed by the temple, the nature, the enchanting landscape, they constantly ask questions and are also impressed by the mythological stories they learn on the spot. They take photos and enjoy the moment until it is time to go back home.

As usual in every educational excursion, the team makes a stop for rest, so as to later take the road back to Piraeus where the Shelter is located. But there is something unpredictable and moving happening. We sit in a small tavern where we get a juice for the kids. A family at the next table shows interest in our team. They look at us, they wonder and the truth is that we are used to something like this every time we go on an excursion. The diversity of our team often catches the eye and is not always in a good mood from others. We are accustomed to rejecting and removing those around us.

But this time it is not like that. They approach us, they want to learn more about the children. Their attitude shows compassion and love. Mr. G. is celebrating his seventieth birthday. He talks to the children and then he calls his grandson. And there unfolds the most beautiful setting. Children start playing and love brings us all closer. Mr. G. is excited to feel that this meeting is not accidental. It is a birthday present for him. He offers food and soft drinks to all of the children, and from the next table, another lady offers the children ice cream.

They invite us to their table and want to learn the story of each child. They want to know about the situation of unaccompanied minors, to help in any way they can. "We are here whenever you need us. Call us. Come to our house to cook for the children. Let us all sit together in the yard and let the boys play with our grandchildren. We tell you the truth… We are here for whatever you need. We will not forget you. That was a sign from God. "

All of us are bewildered… Excited we cannot believe that such a big hug was waiting for us at a random point. Moments and meetings like this, give us hope. People who prove that racism has not taken over society. They are the people who love all the children of the world and make us believe that there is still hope! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
