Organized by Kinoniko EKAV within the framework of the European project EmpowerHER
Human trafficking , the modern form of slavery, is a global phenomenon that transcends geographical and ethnic boundaries. It constitutes one of the most serious crimes against human dignity. The number of identified victims in the European Union has increased dramatically in recent years. Most victims are women, particularly migrants from third countries.
Specifically, Greece has gained the reputation of being a “hub of human trafficking in Europe,” functioning both as a country of entry into the EU and as a destination for victims. In Greece, the high demand for labor in the agricultural and tourism sectors provides traffickers and exploiters with the opportunity to take advantage of the vulnerable position and survival needs of migrants, building well-organized networks that generate enormous profits with minimal risk and zero investment — from a purely economic perspective.
The two-day workshop on human trafficking organized by Kinoniko EKAV on October 20–21, in the wake of the EU Anti-Trafficking Day, was held within the framework of the EmpowerHER project and provided professionals working in the field with the opportunity to explore this critical issue from multiple perspectives.
Representatives of state agencies overseeing and coordinating national policy and action against modern slavery — including the Hellenic Police and the organizations A21, The Salvation Army, and Threads of Hope, guided participants through the complex contemporary “map” of human trafficking with great insight.
Participants from diverse professional backgrounds, such as refugee education coordinators, interpreters, psychologists, social workers, lawyers, caregivers, and others clarified the definition of trafficking, debunked common myths, examined Greek and EU legal frameworks, analyzed indicators of trafficking and different forms of exploitation, and engaged in a role-playing exercise organized by the Greek Council for Refugees, based on real-life scenarios.
